In response to '10 reasons not to get Vista' | APC Magazine

In response to '10 reasons not to get Vista' | APC Magazine

Oof, i'm just getting more irritated at people who don't appreciate others' work. Every IT/ICT person knows that feature and price wise Linux is better than Windows. But Microsoft's clients are mostly not computer geeks or people with a degree in computer science. They do their best to let users do what they want without forcing them to learn what a kernel is.

Just give Microsoft the credit for what they do.

Probably there are a lot of reasons not to get Vista but in 1 year it'll be more widespread than any *nix. Linux will probably never be a mainstream desktop. It's just too technical for a normal user.

Windows hangs at Mup.sys

I had to violently stop the XP and couldn't boot thereafter in any windows mode including safe mode (the boot sequence hungs at Mup.sys).

I spent quite time to read the possible troubleshooting but i didn't try to boot from a windows cd (just couldn't find it). i rebooted like 10 times at least and also changed the BIOS configuration for my processor - no luck.

in the end i just unplugged the cord from the pc , waited for about 30 seconds, plugged it back and then rebooted.

it worked beautifully.

it seems to be quite a nasty problem and more often related to the hardware damage (RAM corrupted, USB devices not properly detected, damaged processor). Anyhow, before doing whatsover, the first thing to do is probably to unpower completely your pc.

I guess it wouldn't work in every case but it's pretty fast to try this. It certainly saved me quite some time.

Recentely I've been asked by tourists from Russia wether it's true that Brussels(Belgium) is the birightest city(country) as seen from the space.

I'm certainly not elegible to give any authorative answer to the question as i'm not an astranaut and not planning to become one in my lifespan 'coz I get unwell even in a car :), but of course living in Belgium I know how the highways are lit at night and of course the street and etc.

I gave no clear answer to their question. I said "Well, it's certainly probable" or something of that kind.

I was not at ease because they expected a more clear answer but at the back of my mind i probably had the picture of the planet at night I had seen at some point before.

So I just googled the "earth at night" and found a picture that could have been provided to them to throw away their doubts.

No, Brussels and Belgium are not the most brightest places on earth seen from the space. The truth is that what is known as the "developed countries" produce enormous amount of light at night.
I'm not quilified enough to judge what region of earth is the proud winner of the-brightest-on-the- earth-at-night competition. However, I'm afraid one of the candidates for the prize could be Brussels.

I'll not be an astranaut :-| but, you know, i can live with it and it doesn't make me upset very much. What upsets me is that i cannot see the sky at night :-S

Picasa-webalbums - belgampaul

Picasa-webalbums - belgampaul

I've reinstalled Picasa today 'coz I needed some red eye editing on a picture. Well, the red eye was more or less corrected by the software and that is a neat feature in itself but as it often happens to me I got hooked on a new functionality of the program called webalbums. It lets you upload up to 250 MB of image data to your account at webalbums. "It's niiice. I like". What really impressed me is that you can add users who will receive a digest of the changes made to the album. Simply put you'll notify them on a regular basis about your new photos ( the same feat is available at google groups but with posts). So no more sending emails with photos to my friends, they just visit my webalbum if they feel like doing it and the same is true for me if my friends create their webalbums and add me to the list of their users.

OK, and now back to work. 3 Apps and 2 reports to make in 4 days. It sounds like I'll be dead the next monday.
